Taking the opportunity to preview its all-electric future to the most endearing enthusiasts in the firm’s arsenal, Alfa Romeo has now officially unveiled the Junior in South Africa. This will be the first of many activations but the Italian automaker wanted to capitalise on the crowds at its first track day of the year. The Formula K venue was used for the first time by the Alfa Romeo Club of South Africa with a turnout of more than 50 cars venturing out onto the circuit.

While the exact launch date and derivatives to be offered remain unconfirmed, we can have a gander that the shown Junior Elettrica will serve as the opening gambit into electrification for Alfa Romeo in South Africa. This all-electric variant features a 209kW electric motor, achieving 0 to 100km/h in about 5.9 seconds. A top speed of 200km/h can be reached but this will likely hurt its WLTP range of 270km.

Other iterations expected locally could also include the Junior Ibrida which propels itself with a 1.2l mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 100kW. Unlikely to be the focus for South Africa, the Junior Ibrida Q4 will predominantly be sold in environments with tricky terrain and inclement weather like snow since it employs a trick all-wheel drive system.

As the name suggest, the latest model in Alfa’s line-up will also serve as an entry into the brand or a direct descendant of the MiTo hatchback. In terms of hierarchy, the entry-level compact SUV will sit beneath the more Premium Tonale, Stelvio and an upcoming large SUV that Alfa intends to rival the likes of the BMW X5.

The Junior will be crucial for Alfa Romeo’s future success to expand its market reach. Being a product of Stellantis’ group efforts, the e-CMP2 platform is also shared with the Peugeot e-2008, Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600e which are models that are all expected to arrive sometime in 2025. The Italian automaker has confirmed that more than 30 000 global preorders for the Junior have already been placed in the segment that has been dominated by the Audi Q2, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
